Personality is more important, when the lights are out and nobody else is around, conversation is going to be hard if she/he has no thing intelligent to say. With that said, looks count for many reasons, mainly for attraction. Also the relationship will be stronger if both parties are similar in looks since confidence and comfort will ensue.
