How nessessary is this?
« on: February 15, 2010, 10:07:07 PM »
Really?  You're small business is struggling and you thought the best way to voice your frustration was to get a billboard calling for the impeachment of a US president?

It's a $6k gamble that I'll bet the business owner wins, especially if it's a B2B. I'm sure all the business owners who are in the loop already know who put the billboard up, and they're all talking about it. Great marketing idea. There are a lot of business owners who feel the same way about Obama, they may end up wanting to support the business who made the statement. -- Worth the risk if your company is on the ropes, he's getting way more than just a billboard ad now.

Well...I can almost assure you that if / when I find out which business(s) it is I'm not spending a dime with them.

It's not that agree or disagree with their political view.  I could quite honestly care less what their agenda is.  It's the fact that instead of taking that 6K and investing it into his / her business and trying to look out for his / her employees they're making a useless public statement of ignorance.

6K on a billboard that promotes the business is sure to bring in much more $$$ than any anonymous mudslinging campaign.

Of course, as I always say...this is IMHO and only IMHO.

...instead of taking that 6K and investing it into his / her business and trying to look out for his / her employees...

Let me pitch it this way - and I know nothing about what business did this, this is just a hypothetical scenario - let's say the business that does this rents industrial equipment to construction companies. There are a lot if construction companies hurting right now, and a lot of people in the Oshkosh area who are not Obama supporters. You're not the only guy around who rents industrial equipment to construction companies, but now you're THAT COMPANY ;) If the billboard was near your location, you may have some new customers show up just to take a cell phone picture of the billboard and get a quote from you for their next job.

It's not like the business owner who put up the billboard burned $6k for nothing. It costs over $6k for a page ad in most magazines, this was a risky investment that appears to be paying off. Only the business owner really knows if this was worth the PR risk. I've got a friend who owns a company that repairs sewer lines who'd do something like this  ::) He had a couple goofy park benches around Chicago, I forget the crazy slogans he had on them  ::)

I have to say that $6k spent on "advertising" is probably well worth the investment in this case.  As they say in showbiz "all publicity is good publicity".
