Appleton Ski Club - Sly Fox
« on: October 26, 2008, 07:10:58 PM »
This is the web address of the Appleton Ski Club called The Slyfox Ski Club.

Please check it out and join us for a meeting.  The trips are VERY affordable and lots of fun.

Unofficially the club moto is "We're a drinking club, with a skiing problem."  lol.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask on our forums, or here.  I'm the webmiester for the club, so if I don't know the answer I can find out for you.

Appleton has a ski club?!  I guess I never thought to look for one, but it sounds interesting.
Looking over the trips, I don't expect it would do me much good to join, but "good on ya" just the same.

Where do you guys normally ski?  2 years ago I started taking my "little guy" (now 4) to Nordic Mt on weeknights.  When just my wife and I go on a weekend, or if I'm going with the guys, we normally head up to Bohemia.  Anyone else ski there?  Might be fun to meet up for some turns, or drinks and stories after skiing.

Other than one out west trip with the club every year, I ski at Granite Peak (Rib Mountain,) several tue nights through the winter, one guys weekend at Brule, one or two weekends in the Upper Pensula, and maybe a couple more weekend days at Rib Mt.

Tue and Thurs. nights at Rib. are buy on lift ticket, get one free.  So if you have your own equipment it's like $14 for a night of skiing and it's only 1.5hours away.

Rib / Brule are about the smallest hills I'll ski.

I hear you about the size of the hills around here.  Once you start going west to ski, it makes it tough to find much challenge on the local hills.  Rib isn't as bad as nordic and brule, but still not a lot of turns for the amount of time spent on the lift.  If you like off-piste skiing and you haven't been there, try Bohemia for your guys weekend.  I usually try to get a couple guys weekends up there and a couple more with my wife.  If there's fresh snow, it's great.  If it's been warm for a couple days prior to getting up there, plan on riding your rock skis/board.

My buddy has a cottage 10min from Brule, that's the ONLY reason I go there.  It's more about the drinking and fun than the actual quality of skiing...lol.

Understood.   ;D

I'm proud to say that the _only_ three times I've ever skied there has been because I got free lift tickets from someone who bought a package deal and couldn't use them up.  Otherwise, I just can't see paying for a lift ticket there.

Always interesting to check out the antique gear still being used by some people up there.

Where do you ski out west?  I've been going out there for the last 10 years or so.  We try to get in 2 trips, but sometimes only make it out there once.  We started going to CO and used to ski mostly in Summit county, but have since migrated to Jackson Hole and one of last years trips was to Salt Lake city.  UT was phenomenal!  We hit a weather cycle just right and in the 5 days we were there they got 98" at snowbird!!  We skied 3 days at snowbird and 1 at Alta.  It was just too good to go try any other hills.

So far:

Big Sky Mt - my fav.
Steamboat
Jackson Hole
Crested Butte
Banff

I've also skiied Lutzen which is very good for the midwest, but the drive SUCKS.

My fav. for the WI / UP area is Whitecap, then Rib Mt (but only on a slow day,) then Indian head.

We're going to Boyne Mt. in Lower MI this winter instead of out west.  With Evie being 2 it's hard to get away for an entire week without her and the clubs decieded not to do any long weekend out west trips this year.

I want to get to Snowbird and Whistler

PS...I'm updating the content of the ski club site right now.  I just got the content to post.  Should be up by 9 or so.  (and yes, the black and white pictures at the top of every page IS me!)

I've actually never skied Lutzen.  I've heard a lot of good stuff about it, but never made the drive.  My argument for not going there has always been that if I'm going to drive 12 hours for Lutzen, I might as well drive the extra 3 and get the Vail or Breckenridge.  With going to the UP, since bohemia opened, it's worth the extra hour or so to get there compared with the hills around Hurley.

Last year we made it out to Bozeman over Christmas.  We actually spent more time at Bridger Bowl than at Big Sky.  The place was empty and had a lot of nice steeps too.  They both have great terrain, and to be fair the weather played a big part in staying at Bridger.  They had between 4 and 12 inches of fresh every night.  BigSky wad getting half that or less each night.

I think my favorite hills for the terrain have been Jackson Hole and Alta.  Vail has some good stuff too, but there's a lot of people there compared with JH or Alta.

I know what you mean about it being hard to make the trips.  Our daughter just turned 3 and son is 4.  It makes the ski trips a little tougher.  He's been skiing the last 2 years, and this will be her first year on skis.  Are you going to be getting Evie on skis this year?

We may try Evie on skis around the back yard or something this winter, but I don't think we'll put her on a hill yet.  Next year for sure though.

Taylor was born in December.  Two years ago, we started by just leaving the skis in the living room.  Every couple days he'd put the boots and skis on and tromp around the house in them.  We started taking him to Kimberly park to ski on the bottom part of the sledding hill.  After he started getting the hang of it, we took him over to nordic a couple times that year.  I don't know if it helped him learn to ski any faster but it was always a fun activity for me  :)
