Can anyone help with a Volvo Penta Winterization?
« on: October 23, 2005, 08:01:52 PM »
I'm  a DIY guy at heart, and a motorhead to boot...sooo....

I've got a Volvo Penta SP lower unit.  The pickup for the water inlet is at the very front of the unit.

The guy as Boats US recommended a set of round Ear Muff's for winterization, but they only work if there is pressre in the water line.  I can't get the boat to pick up any anti-freeze as it's a gravity feed not off the house water line.

Has anyone seen a specific muff set up for these lower units?  I'm about to resort to disassembling the pickup line in the engine compartment.  It'd be much easier with a set of proper muff's if they exist.

Drain the block and manifolds (there are drain plugs on both), remove the thremostat and fill the block with antifreeze through the thermostat housing. Also remove the hoses going to the manifolds, tilt them up and fill with antifreeze.

PS. This method is for lake/sea water cooled engines.

This is the method recommended by Mercury Marine.

The step by step instructions should be in your owner’s manual. If you don’t have one you should be able to get one or download one at the engines website.

I got the hook up from the guys at Mr. Watersports.

There's a small hole at the bottom of the housing that is another pickup.  As I was running coolant in the side mounts, it was just draining out the botom...lol.

Tape that off, and I should get enough of a seal for the muffs!

Update.....boat is winterized and ready to go into a friends Barn for the winter.  Who knew a 3in long piece of duct tape is all I needed.   LOL.

Live and learn I guess.
