About the Saferide program in Appleton WI


Our Mission… Provide safe, free rides home for tavern and restaurant patrons living in Appleton and adjacent communities who should not be driving. • Rides are free to patrons (although we do encourage patrons to tip their cab drivers) • Rides are available for anyone needing a ride home for any legitimate reasons. Typically this means including overindulgence but rides are also readily available for those who may be ill, have an adverse reaction to medication, are too tired to drive, or who may be having relationship issues. • Rides are provided by taxi companies and are available 24/7, 365 days a year. • Rides are to patron’s residence only (including local hotels) and not to another establishment, restaurant, or any other location. • Communities served include Appleton, Grand Chute, Mackville, Little Chute, Kimberly, Harrison, Buchanan, Menasha, and Town of Menasha. • Important Caveat… Saferide DOES NOT alleviate an establishment’s responsible beverage service obligations. Our Goal… Nothing less than the ELIMINATION of drunk driving in our communities. The program in Appleton is operated by a privately funded, non-profit organization called Saferide Appleton, Inc. Getting a Free Cab Ride Home is Quick and Easy… 1. Patrons at participating establishments simply ask their bartender or server for a Saferide. 2. The bartender or server will request the patron’s ID to confirm the home address and fill out a Saferide voucher. 3. The bartender or server calls a cab for the patron and gets an estimate of when the cab will arrive. The bartender or server gives the patron two copies of voucher. 4. When the cab arrives, the driver asks for the vouchers and takes the patron home. It’s that simple! The Impact of Our Program… Last year we gave out 2200 rides to area residents. This year we are on pace to give out over 3000 rides. If just 75 establishments join Saferide and each gives out just two rides per week, then we would provide over 7500 rides a year to our friends and neighbors in Appleton and surrounding communities. According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration statistics… These 7500 rides mean we would avoid 19.5 alcohol-related crashes in Appleton (that’s a crash almost every other week). We would also save $1,145,254 in crash related costs. More importantly, since 1 out of every 30 alcohol-related crashes takes a life, we would statistically… SAVE ONE LIFE EVERY 18 MONTHS!
